Chuy is a funny little town on the Brazilian border of Uruguay. Now, when I say it is on the border, literally I mean that there are two parts to Chuy, or Chui as it is spelt in Brazil. There is one main street, running along the Uruguayan side, named Avenida Brazil, and sure enough, parallel to that street, running along the Brazilian side is Avenida Uruguay. So technically, you could be standing in Brazil and Uruguay at the same time (now remember that I am from Australia, so this is quite a novelty to someone like me!)
Although throughout the summer time it has an influx of beach tourists, the main attraction here is the Duty Free Shopping. On the Uruguayan side you will find all sorts of treasures in the Duty Free Shops; it is like a massive outdoor airport. Cameras, electrical goods, perfumes, watches, handbags….you will find it all there. The bonus for anyone living in Uruguay, is that you are also able to find some international food and treats. I have seen all sorts of sauces, seasoning, olives and specialty items for sale in these shops.
So is there more to Chuy than Duty Free Shopping? Well I guess you can say there is. You have the Smorgasboard restaurants that serve all different kinds of meat and sides (Espeto Corrido), there are the beaches, the fortress and a water park. If you are in this area of Uruguay, it is worth going to check out the blend of Brazilian and Uruguayan on the border here at Chuy. It is a great option on rainy days, and if you are in Punta del Diablo, which is right nearby, it is worth the trip to have a look around.
And if you go, don’t forget to get one of these pics – on either side of the border!
Hasta pronto!
