Exploring the Markets in Montevideo

I love to visit the markets of every town or city that we go to.  There is something about markets that is really appealing to me.  It could be the different types of food that are usually available to eat as you walk around, or the myriad of goods that can be found like the crafts, antiques and treasures.  It could also be the intriguing people that you generally find at the markets.  There are usually some interesting characters and markets are great places to get to rub shoulders with the locals, and experience the “real” way of life of the country that you are visiting.

In Montevideo, you will nearly find a market on in some area every day of the week.  They are great places for sourcing your weekly fruit and vegetables, cheeses, hams, even seafood.  There are lots of choices for clothes, leather goods, Mate accessories and jewellery.

If you are a fan of markets like I am, I recommend the following three to check out; Tristian Navaja, Parque Rodo, and Sarandi

When I think Tristian Navaja, I think MASSIVE.  Blocks and blocks of pretty much anything you can imagine (my Dad even found an Australian 20 cent piece for sale there – although he wasn’t keen on buying it for US$10!!).    The Tristian Navaja markets come to life every Sunday morning.  The market is set out along the streets of Montevideo, and take up blocks and blocks with people displaying their wares.  You will find antiques, in fact there are some antique shops open in this area as well.  There are all sorts of tools, bric a brac, household items, food, pets, clothes…pretty much anything you can think of, you will find here at Tristian Navaja.

Parque Rodo hosts a market over the weekend.  The surroundings are lovely, and you will find all sorts of crafts, clothes and food.  Hand made wares are well featured here, and you are sure to find a souvenir to take home with you.

On Saturday morning you will find the Peatonal Sarandi come alive with market stands.  Again, you will find all sorts of goodies including antiques, crafts and souvenirs.  The atmosphere is lovely, and to wander the streets, check out the coffee shops, and make your way to the Mercado Puerto for lunch is a perfect way to spend your Saturday in Montevideo.

Remember though, these are just a few of the markets that you find throughout Montevideo.  These are just a few of my favourites.  Have you been to a market in Uruguay?  Please leave a comment below, I would love to hear from you.

Hasta pronto!
